“The Deep Cut and the Irish”

As the Erie Canal neared completion, the final push was to
make the Deep Cut through the Niagara Escarpment. This
presentation will examine the difficulties the engineers faced
and how the Irish laborers contributed in making the
nearly impossible task a reality.

In 1821, Ireland had yet another crop failure and Canadian
official Peter Robinson led a highly successful relief scheme to
emigrate over 2000 impoverished Irish out of Ireland
and relocate to them to Upper Canada.
